Feminism is a social, political, and economic movement to establish equal rights for women.
Women’s rights are the basic human rights and liberties of women. These include the right to vote, property ownership, and equal access to education.
Women’s rights are protected by legislation in all countries of the world.
On the surface, it may seem like there is little overlap between feminism and women’s rights. After all, one of the tenets of feminism is the belief that men and women are equal—but shouldn’t be treated as such.
But feminists have always worked to ensure that women have equal rights to men, whether it was by fighting for women’s suffrage or ensuring that working mothers could get paid leave from their jobs. And today, we can see just how far our society has come in this regard: we now have laws protecting female employees against sexual harassment and discrimination on the basis of gender identity; we’ve made it illegal for employers to ask prospective employees about their salary histories; we’ve made it illegal for employers to require that employees agree not to disclose certain types of information under threat of dismissal; and many more.
Of course, there’s still a long way to go before equality is achieved. But we’re making good progress!
